Service Overview

To ensure that persons with disabilities have the same freedom of access to information and equal opportunities to use library resources as others, the National Library for the Disabled produces and distributes books needed for academic study, professional work, self-development, and general education in accessible formats tailored to different types of disabilities.

Materials for Persons with Visual Impairments

  • DAISY Materials: Produced as digital talking books based on the international DAISY standard for readers with visual impairments, physical disabilities, dyslexia, and other print disabilities

  • Electronic Braille Materials: Produced mainly for specialized materials where audio support is unavailable, such as second-language texts, STEM resources, and sheet music. These are provided as digital braille files compatible with braille displays and suitable for braille printing.

  • Braille-Labeled Books: Created by attaching braille label stickers to the pages of printed books so that children with visual impairments and sighted children can read together

  • 3-Day Dream (DAISY): A rapid service that provides DAISY files within three business days (excluding the date of application) so that users with disabilities can quickly review a book’s general content. Files are created by scanning the original text with minimal editing and including only Level 1 table-of-contents information.

Materials for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

  • Sign Language Video Resources: Produced by translating the content of printed books into Korean Sign Language (KSL), a unique visual–gestural language used by the Deaf community

Materials for Persons with Developmental Disabilities

  • Easy-to-Read Resources: Designed for persons with developmental disabilities, including autism and intellectual disabilities. These materials simplify sentence structure and length using easy vocabulary and include illustrations that support understanding of the content.

General Alternative Format Materials

  • Accessible EPUB 3.x: Created by adding accessibility features to standard EPUB 2.0–based e-books so that persons with disabilities can access and navigate digital content

  • PDF/UA (Portable Document Format/Universal Accessibility): Produced by structuring PDF content to support accessible navigation. Features such as defined reading order, image descriptions (alt text), and structured table information enable users with disabilities to access the same documents as other users.
